GEORGE H. 'CARPY' SARGEN
Services to be held for George H. 'Carpy' Sargen, age 85, of 450
Highlawn Avenue, Elizabethtown, PA, formerly of Marietta, PA, died Friday
afternoon at Essa Flory Hospice Center, Lancaster, PA. Born in Marietta,
he was the son of the late Maxwell and Katie McBride Sargen. He was the
husband of Betty Houser Sargen. They would have been married for 56 years
on April 7. Mr. Sargen was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church
in Elizabethtown where he was an usher and served on the staff parish
relations committee. A 1936 graduate of the former Marietta High School,
he served in the United States Army Air Corps as a first sergeant during
World War II. He was employed by the federal government for 34 years. He
retired in 1976 from New Cumberland Army Depot as a logistics specialist.
He had also been employed by the former Olmsted Air Force Base in
Middletown and the former Marietta Army Depot. From 1977-95, Mr. Sargen
was chief sergeant-at-arms at the Pennsylvania State House of
Representatives in Harrisburg. During the late 70's, he was the Republican
committee chairman for Elizabethtown. Additionally, he served on the Civil
Service Commission in Elizabethtown for 10 years from 1985-95. Mr. Sargen
was a member of Casiphia Lodge No. 551, Free and Accepted Masons, in
Marietta, Harrisburg Lodge of Perfection, Harrisburg Consistory, Zembo
Luncheon Club in Harrisburg, and High Twelve Club No. 629 in
Elizabethtown. He was also a member of American Legion, Conewago Post No.
329 and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fred Barley Post No. 5667, both in
Elizabethtown. He was a life member of Benevolent and Protective Order of
Elks Lodge No. 1092 in Middletown, an honorary member of Pennsylvania
Sheriffs' Association, and an associate member of Fraternal Order of
Police. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a member of the Cold Cabin
Hunting Lodge in York County, Amateur Trapshooting Association, and a life
member of both the National Riflemen Association and Conewago Rod and Gun
Club. In his earlier years, he played semi-pro baseball on a league in
Texas. In 1984, he was inducted into the Susquehanna Chapter, Pennsylvania
Sports Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed playing golf and bowling. He was
preceded in death by six brothers, Charles, Joseph, James, Louis, Cleon,
and Robert, and three sisters, Helen McElroy, K. Jane Sargen, and
Josephine Sargen. He is survived by his wife, Betty Houser Sargen of
Elizabethtown, a son, Norman Sargen of Parkesburg, a daughter, Lisa Sargen
Greene of Elizabethtown, two sisters, Nan, wife of Norman Ney of Mount Joy
and Artennis Gohn of Mountville, two brothers, Armand Sargen of North
Carolina and E. Scott, husband of Nancy Sargen of Elizabethtown, and two
grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul's United
Methodist Church, Oak and Spruce Streets, Elizabethtown, PA on Friday,
March 28, 2003 at 11:00 AM with Pastor James D. Corbett officiating.
Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. There will be
no viewing. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday
morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. A Masonic Service
will be conducted at the church on Tuesday morning at 10:45 AM by Casiphia
Lodge No. 551. The family requests that flowers please be omitted.
Contributions may be made to the building fund of St. Paul's United
Methodist Church, Spruce and Oak Streets, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.
