My FIL has mets in stage IV with mets to lung and bones. He has started chemo, and the onc said she will give him 2 cycles of gemzar. If at the end of the two cycles, there is no improvement, she will put him on another kind of chemo. He wanted to take a trip to see his sister and asked about that. She said since this treatment is strictly palliative, there was no rush to get started, that quality of life was as important and extending it. So he went.

I'm confused by what she meant by palliative. Does this mean the chemo is not going to extend his life and she is only trying to make him comfortable? If so, what is the point of giving the chemo? She speaks very quickly, and many questions are left unasked.

Has anyone else been told the treatment is 'strictly palliative'?
