The blood banks have a donation program where friends and family can donate in the NAME of the person who is receiving the blood and they get 'credits' for the blood they receive. It doesn't have to be the same blood type it is just really an exchange program. Go talk to either the hospital blood bank or the local blood bank and see about it. My husband was involved in this for years and I think these programs are still active. This way there will be no charge for the blood. You might still be able to get this done and they can scrap the bill for the blood. This is a shame the insurance doesn't cover it. My crappy little small insurance co covered several thousand dollars in blood bills for my husband.
