I am sorry that you are faced with these difficult choices, but I agree with the others that hospice is your best bet at this point. In our area, there is a hospice team that will "take over" the care of the hospice patient even for a hospitalized person. The whole philosophy changes. Hospice care is so nurturing and directed toward the whole person and the family, keeping that person comfortable is paramount. Many times the staff in a hospital will avoid going in to the room of a patient who is dying, if there is no further "treatment" planned, they can find it emotionally difficult to deal with the dying. If you do decide to take your husband home with the help of hospice, they will arrange for everything you will need to keep him comfortable, including delivery of the hospital bed and the equipment to assist with the chest tube(actually only a connection to a bottle is needed, a suction machine isn't necessary.) My mom died a year ago, at home, with the aid of hospice. She used hospice for 4 months and they were wonderful at helping us make the most of each day and keeping Mom comfortable. Best wishes to all of you and God Bless. Mary Jo,RN, daughter of Lydia, passed away 3-30-99
