My husband was dx on 5/3/07 We started Gemzar chemo on 5/16/07. We did not want to delay. A second opion at UAB in Birmingham could not be scheduled until 7/3/07. Both were same. His CA19-9 was over 50,000 after second chemo. Then, it started falling. He started on oral Tarceva in July. The pain abated after that. He has been pain free since. The A19-9 level was just over 1000 at last check. He has had thinning of hair, but not total loss. It actually has started growing again. He is prone to get cellulitis--deep tissue infection that requires a hospital stay of about 5 days to and 10 days of antibiotic to get rid of it. His appetite somewhat came back as his CA levels started to fall. He gained 13 pounds this summer, but latest infection caused loss of 10 pounds of that. The ensure was what he lived on for a while. Oncologist suggested he drink liquids with calories, no just water. We have him on Gatorade. Hope this will give you some idea. However, all who are diagnosed are different.
