I seem to recall that Erick Carpenter's wife had a pain pump implanted and he had great things to say about it. I have copied his response re this for your convenience:

Permanent Epidural was posted on 03/07/2007 04:39 pm by Erick Carpenter erick @carpenter.net There is also a permanent epidural that was a godsend for my wife. no pain meds other than the numbing meds in the fanny pack. they placed an epidural under the skin to a port that was mounted on the rib. simply insert your fanny pack line into the port and away you go. (can't feel the rib area, so inserting a needle into the port does't hurt) and no side effects like you get from morphine or other heavy narcotics. absolutely wonderful for pain management.

As I'm not too familiar with pain pumps, I hope this helps a little.
