Pancreas Cancergraphic need advice was posted 06/30/2007 04:23 am by Sad
My Mother has had a stroke which has left her unable to speak, write or eat
on her own. She is extremely weak and (I believe) sad. I do not have power of
attorney and all of her bills are due (mortgage, health insurance, you name
it). She has been self employed and living on just enough (from her
business). She has been totally, fiercely independent until two weeks ago
when this stroke hit her. A month ago she went to the Social Security office
and was told that she was due 14,000.00. Today forms came in the mail to
formalize. She had refused to discuss these ‘end of life’ issues with me
because she truly didn’t see this coming- as a result I am clueless as to her
debtors her bank information etc. She does have a will but that wont help us
now… Being in this helpless state is her worst nightmare. My heart breaks to
see her so so … small.
Who can I call and what can I do. I know that her time with us is very
limited, A feeding tube was placed yesterday because she was literally
starving to death. I am her only child and only relative. She is a very young
59 years old. She has been fighting PC for 17 months. It’s the stroke and
malnutrition that are pulling her away right now, not the cancer.
Can I get financial power of attorney if she can agree nonverbally, by
nodding - fast? Doesn’t conservatorship take a long tome and isn’t it
expensive? What do I need in order to go to her bank, to deal with Social
Security, to figure out her mortgage payment details…
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Deeply concerned, only-child.
