I had a similiar experience with my mother and kidney failure. The last two and half mos. of her life were hellish suffering, because my sister and I could not let go. She'd made her decision but we kept pushing; she'd always been such a take-charge, strong person. It's still hard to think about the end.

But, like all those old sayings, the one about time does hold some truth. Time telescopes, and when you look back, you get a more complete view, and if you look back far enough, you can see past the pain to the good times that came before. It's hard and takes practice, but worth the effort.
