When I had my abdominal surgery last May to relieve my blocked bile duct, I did not have a transfusion even though the surgery lasted nearly 6 hours. (The doctors were trying to decide whether or not to do a modified whipple in the middle of the whole thing, once they discovered the cancer.) I think 'mrs' has some terrific, detailed information for you. Don't wait to get the surgery if it's needed, but do ask questions so that you can get what you need.
