It's a slow process. Don't hesitate to be in contact with the doctor for progress updates and advice...just leave messages on the doctor's line and/or with his/her assistant.
In my humble opinion, getting off the feeding tube is the first goal. Other good advice given to me was to not be concerned with taking pain meds since appropriate pain management helps accelerate recovery.
Do a search on this website on 'nutrition' 'diet', etc. There have been some good postings and words to the wise re post-whipple dietary advice.
No wonder your dad is down and frustrated....who wouldn't be in his situation. It takes a day at a time to recover and six months from now seems very far away indeed, but he will get better.
I also would not hesitate to guide him to a good psychiatrist/counselor who has a reputation for helping people through periods of medical stress.
