Phase 1 of the Virginia Mason protocol combines daily radiation with 24/7 infusions of 5FU, thrice weekly interferon injuections and cysplatin once a week. When my wife was going through it, our strategy was to never let off the nausea medicine which meant kytril followed 4 hours later by zophran (you can get it in tablets that dissolve on the tongue) followed 4 hours later by phenegran (you can get suppositories when the nausea is so bad that keeping a pill down is impossible)followed 4 hours later by kytril and back through the rotation. And every 4 hours means setting your alarm and getting up in the middle of the night to give the next nausea medication. Never let the nausea get ahead of you or you will have one hell of a time getting it back in check. Attempts to eat were preceeded by marinol. We will be 2 years post whipple on 1/21/06. My wife is back at work and life is good. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
