Yes, the Whipple is risky surgery - of course any surgery is but the Whipple is more so than most. If the cancer hasn't spread your mom may be a candidate but I agree with what's already been said - get a second opinion, and get someone who's had experience with this operation! Just how risky it is depends a lot on your mom's health and age, too, but having an experienced surgeon is very important. I keep repeating this advice and will continue to do so because of my own experience: If you don't have the information you need from your dr., keep asking!! If they flat out won't answer you (be aware that sometimes there just are no answers, which is different from not taking the time to talk with you) - find someone else! You are paying the drs. for their experience and expertise and the information they can provide you. Don't be shy about asking - yes they're busy - because they have patients - your mom is one of them and deserves their attention and time too. Sometimes they neglect/forget to tell you things or aren't even aware that you don't have all the information you want unless you speak up. One last note on the Whipple: there are lots of good links and also lots of good information in the Johns Hopskins sites... you may find info there that helps. Good luck....
