EVELYN RABEAUX A STORY OF AN E

THIS IS A STORY ABOUT MY MOTHER EVELYN RABEAUX....THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN I HAVE EVER KNOWN. IT WAS AUGUST 10,2006 I WAS AT WORK AND THE DAY SEEMED ORDINARY UNTIL I GOT A PHONE CALL THAT WOULD CHANGE MY LIFE FOREVER. IT WAS A HOSPITAL IN LAKE CHARLES. ON THE LINE WAS A NURSE AND SHE TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED TO COME AS QUICKLY AS I COULD...THAT MY MOTHER WAS THERE AND I NEEDED TO COME AND PICK HER UP. I TRIED TO GET MORE INFORMATION, BUT THE NURSE WOULD NOT DISCUSS ANY THING WITH ME ON THE PHONE. I LIVE IN NEDERLAND, TEXAS, WHICH IS ABOUT AN HOUR AWAY FROM LAKE CHARLES. SO THE WHOLE WAY TO THE HOSPITAL I WAS CONTEMPLATING ON WHAT WAS THE URGENCY WITH MOM. I KNEW THAT SHE HAD GONE TO THE DOCTOR SEVERAL TIMES BECAUSE OF ABDOMINAL PAIN THAT WAS RADIATING IN TO HER BACK. SHE HAD BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH SEVERAL DIFFERENT THINGS SUCH AS INFECTION IN THE LINING OF HER STOMACH AND FIBROID TUMORS TO NAME A FEW. SHE WAS GIVEN A TON OF PAIN MEDICATION AND SENT ON HER WAY..... WHEN I GOT TO THE HOSPITAL, I SAW MY MOM IN THE WAITING ROOM..SHE WAS IN TEARS AND TOLD ME THAT SHE HAD PANCREATIC CANCER. AFTER SPEAKING WITH THE DOCTOR IT WAS DETERMINED THROUGH 3 CT SCANS AND CA19-9 BLOOD TESTS THAT SHE HAD PANCREATIC CANCER. THEY HAD ALSO FOUND SPOTS ON HER LIVER. WE WERE REFERED TO A HOSPITAL IN LAFAYETTE, LA. SHE HAD A SERIES OF CT SCANS, ULTRASOUNDS AND BLOOD TESTS DONE THERE TOO. THE RESULTS THERE WERE THE SAME. THE BLOOD TESTS HAD ALSO SHOWN THAT MY MOTHER WAS ANEMIC (LOW RED BLOOD CELL COUNT). THE DR. PUT HER ON 350MG OF FESOL (IRON SUPPLEMENT) TO RAISE HER COUNTS. WHEN WE RECIEVED THE TEST RESULTS FROM THE 2ND ROUND OF TESTS IN LAFAYETTE....THE NEWS WAS DEVESTATING. MOM'S PC HAD ALRADY METASTISIZED TO HER LIVER AND LYMPH NODES. WE ALSO FOUND OUT THAT HER GALL BLADDER WAS ENLARGED. SHE WAS ALREADY STAGE 4. THEY GAVE HER 3 TO 6 MONTHS TO LIVE AND ONLY OFFERED 4 ROUNDS OF CHEMO WITH GEMZAR AS A PALLIATIVE TREATMENT (MEANING TO TREAT SYMPTOMS ONLY)OR HOSPICE CARE. MOM DECIDED TO TRY THE CHEMO. BEING THAT SHE WAS ONLY 52 YEARS OLD, SHE WAS NOT READY TO DIE. SHE WANTED TO TRY CHEMO TO STAY ALIVE AS LONG AS SHE COULD.ON 08/28/2006 SHE HAD A BIOPSY. IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT IT WAS ADENOCARCINOMA OF THE PANCREAS. MOM'S FIRST INJECTION OF GEMZAR WAS GOING TO BE SEPTEMBER 15,2006. THE DAY BEFORE WE HAD TO ATTEND A TEACHING CLASS ON GEMAZAR AND MOM HAD TO DO BLOOD TESTS TO CHECK HER BLOOD COUNTS. LATER THAT AFTERNOON, THE DR HAD CALLED US AND SAID THAT MOM'S RED BLOOD CELL COUNT WAS TO LOW TO START CHEMO. INSTEAD OF RECIEVING CHEMO ON 9-15-2006. SHE HAD TO HAVE A BLOOD TRANSFUSION. SHE RECIEVED 3 PINTS OF BLOOD. THIS WAS AN ALL DAY PROCESS AND MOM HAS ROLLING VEINS. THEY HAD TO RE START HER IV 3 TIMES... SHE WAS MISERABLE. REGULAR RED BLOOD CELL COUNTS ARE 12-14 MOM WAS A 7 BEFORE THE TRANSFUSION. THE DR. TOLD US THAT MOM WOULD HAVE TO HAVE A BLOOD TRANSFUSION AFTER EVERY 2-3 INJECTIONS OF GEMZAR. AFTER HEARING THIS WE WENT HOME. MOM WAS RESCHEDULED TO HAVE HER 1ST INJECTION ON 09/18/2006. SHE HOWEVER DECIDED NOT TO DO THE CHEMO BECAUSE SHE WAS REALLY NOT HEALTHY ENOUGH TO RECIEVE IT. WE CALLED HOSPICE. MOM HAD A GREAT NURSE NAMED CHRIS. SHE WAS WONDERFUL TO MOM. MOMS HEALTH WAS RAPIDLY DECLINING. SHE HAD LOST A TON OF WEIGHT. 173 AT DIAGNOSIS 151 AS OF 10/20/2006. WE DID NOT WEIGH HER ANYMORE AFTER THAT. SHE HAD SEVERE NAUSEA AND VOMITING. SHE COULD NOT KEEP ANYTHING DOWN...EVENTUALLY SHE COULD NOT EVEN HOLD WATER DOWN. SHE THREW UP BILE 5-6 TIMES A DAY. AND HER STOMACH WAS SWELLING DUE TO ACITES. HER URINE WAS THE COLOR OF COKE AND SHE DID NOT HAVE A BOWEL MOVEMENT FOR 6 WEEKS BEFORE SHE DIED. MOM GOT TO THE POINT THAT SHE COULD NOT EVEN SWALLOW ANYMORE. SHE WAS ON MORPHINE DROPS THAT HAD TO BE PUT UNDER HER TONGUE. SHE WAS ALSO ON A FENTYOL PATCH AND 2 DIFFERENT GEL MEDICATIONS THAT I HAD TO RUB IN TO HER SKIN. INSPITE OF ALL OF THIS, WE MADE THE BEST OF THE TIME WE HAD TOGETHER. WE WATCHED MOVIES ALOT (DIRTY DANCING WAS HER FAVORITE). SHE LOVED FOR ME TO PAINT HER NAILS. I WOULD EVEN DYE HER HAIR. THAT WAS NOT AN EASY TASK.....SHE WAS BED RIDDEN. I SPENT A LOT OF TIME READING TO HER. WE ALSO PRAYED.....PRAYED FOR GOOD TO HEAL HER OR HAVE MERCY ON HER. ON FRIDAY DECEMBER 8,2006 MOM HAD A SEIZURE AT 10:30 A.M. AFTER THAT SHE BECAME UNRESPONSIVE. HER NURSE SAID THAT SHE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO RESPOND TO US ANYMORE. I WAS HOLDING HER AND TELLING HER HOW MUCH I LOVED HER AND SHE RESPONDED BACK AND SAID 'I LOVE YOU' i CALLED CHRIS AND TOLD HER WHAT HAD HAPPENDED AND SHE WAS IN SHOCK....SHE COULD NOT BELIEVE THAT MOM HAD ANSWERED ME. mOM HAD ALREDY LIVED PAST WHAT THE DOCTORS HAD EXPECTED AND THEY WERE ALL AMAZED BY HER.....SO WAS I. SHE HAD TO MORE SEIZURES THAT DAY BEFORE SHE DIED. I WAS HOLDING HER HAND WHEN SHE TOOK HER LAST BREATH... I AM WRITING THIS STORY IN LOVING MEMORY OF MY WONDERFUL MOTHER EVELYN....I LOVE YOU MOM.........WE WILL BE TOGETHER AGAIN, BUT UNTIL THEN..............DM
