There are only a couple of surgeons here in Germany who can do this. Inevidably they have to entirely reconstruct the portal vein. The body can live with less liver. The resection of several liver sections was the most expensive part on our bill: about 1900 Euros or 2400 USD. But that was only for the liver part. It's 3.5 times the amount any insurance pays for it here. However, because there are so few vascular surgeons to go around and which are absolut necessary it is self-pay or private insurance. Some US insurance companies cover the bill, because it is still less expensive than in the US.
