From what you say about dad's current condition, I would not suggest he start up with avastin. Avastin will not help his blood clots at all! There are many other trials and treatments your dad may be able to get, look into other options. Everyone reacts differently to treatments, but my dad's clinical trial of gemzar, avastin and erbitux did not help him, after 8 weeks his oncologist pulled him off this plan and started him with GTX which has helped a lot!

If I were you, I would try to make it to dad's next oncologist appointment, explain it to him that you just want to make sure he is getting the best treatment out there and you have questions for the doctor. Once you meet with the doctor, you can explain that you do not live near by and ask it the dr would be ok with talking to you on the phone when you have questions regarding dad's care. Try to develop a relationship with the doctor from the beginning so that the doctor feels comfortable talking to you and knows your father is fine with you and the dr talking about his care.

Good luck!
