Hi, Michael - I'm really sorry your dad and your family are in this position. My dad was also very angry but, aside from the emotional and psychological stress of cancer, there may also be some physical reasons for it.

My dad was not cooperative when it came to pain management so a great deal of that physical pain came out as anger, either in at a constant level for several days or in major outbursts. He was a fiercely independent guy and fought everything and everyone, every step of the way. If it wasn't his idea, it wasn't happening. His pet name for most medical personnel was 'idiot'.

He was angry about his loss of freedom and mobility. Even when he felt relatively well, he had such horrible bouts of gas and diarrhea that he was afraid to leave his house. Eventually, he couldn't drive anymore and that was a tremendous blow.

I also remember that the anger seemed to come in waves, when something particularly painful or different arose. All those changes - the ones that took away what he considered to be his core being - were pretty harsh blows and he lashed out furiously sometimes.

I just wanted to suggest that you consider the pain management possibility as well as all the non-physical possibilities that might cause your father to feel this way.

I hope you find some helpful answers soon,

KK
