When dad first started taking chemo, his legs too were swollen and tender to walk on. It got better after he started taking the water pill. He ended up taking around 12 or 13 treatments. It is true that the standard measure is to do 6 treatments and then a scan.

The onc is right, there is not anyone on earth that can cure your mother but there are people that can treat her with respect and do everything to give her quality and quantity. Just because someone is terminal doesn't mean they don't deserve fair and persistent treatment. Remind the onc that she is still alive and all you want is for her life to be as good as it can be. Doctors get frustrated with diseases they can't beat but they can not forget compassion, understanding and the strength of the will to live.
