In my dad's case I'm honestly not sure if it was worth it. He wasn't even sick up until he started chemo (his heart doctor though something wasn't right and sent him for the CT scan that found the cancer).

He did okay, mostly, with the first round of Gemzar. We then switched to GTX and he got really, really sick. Everything went downhill from there and he came home from the hospital to hospice.

He was the one who decided that he didn't want any more treatments. It wasn't worth it to him and he was very much at peace with leaving us.

In retrospect, and I'll never know for sure, I wonder if he would have had more quality time without the chemo.
