Glad to hear that life is returning to a somewhat "normal" state and that your mom is comfortable and that you're doing something for yourself! You made a very good point about the meds. When my mom was dying(in a small town hospital) her doctor kept increasing the morphine until she was basically in a coma and died. I later asked my doctor about it. He said it's possible to give a dosage that controls the pain but doesn't stop the patient's breathing. I strongly disagreed with what my mom's doctor was doing at the time but got no support from the rest of my family.
