Calling in hospice is a very individual decision. I see two sides and it depends on the patient. If the patient has resigned themselves to dying and everyone is in the dying mode, looking for dying symptons, expecting dying services (oxygen, counseling ...) then hospice is right. If the patient is still full of hope, talking about the future, researching new drugs, then forget hospice. Hospice prepares the patient and family for death - period. My mother was not expecting to die in her mind, was still talking about going shopping 3 days before she died, was making future plans, was horrifed when she heard a nurse say something about "a week left", was terrifed when her new symptons went unreported to doctors and no help was sent. Hospice was truly not for her. The end result is the same. Do you really need to prepare for death?? No. Hope is the candle that keeps them talking, smiling, and dreaming. I wouldn't take that away from her last days at all. Denial - sure, but so what. She was happy until her last breathe. I regret bringing in hospice and upsetting her spirit.
