I know that hospice will not perform procedures that will prolong life, but they SHOULD perform procedures that will make your father more comfortable. Ask them about a paracentesis. It is a relatively minor procedure where fluid that is accumulating in the abdomen is drawn off with a needle and tube. It can help a great deal with the bloating look that your father has. Yes, the fluid might come back in a few days, but there's a good chance they will draw off several liters of fluid. He might feel a little wiped out for a day because the fluid will contain albumin and he will miss having that. However, if you consider how heavy fluid is, he has lots and lots of extra weight pushing on his internal organs, probably making it impossible for him to feel like he could put any food in his stomach at all. My brother's lungs had so much pressure on them that the doctors said they were only the size of two balled-up fists. No wonder he was short of breath and suffering from lack of oxygen! There may be other things going on with your dad and this may not be appropriate, but you might want to at least ask about it and see if they feel this will give him the best chance to be comfortable for the time he has left. I hope things go easier with your dad!
