Ray, no question is a dumb question...1). yes, you can live without the pancreas, in some cases they do remove it, then replace the insulin and enzymes it produces with medication...I'm sure it's not as easy as I just made it sound there, but it is possible. 2). I wondered the same thing about suggesting the Whipple now ( I think I asked before--my blonde roots are very prevalent these days though so I'm not too sure) anyway, with the arterial involvement it doesn't make sense to me, that now, months later, after the tumor has grown, that it could be a possibility. But on the other hand, if it is, and you can go to Hopkins, what a great thing. I guess you'd have to ask the surgeon why he changed his mind. How does your dad feel about having the surgery? Is he up for it mentally? My dad said he wouldn't have considered it even if he was a candidate...don't know now if that was protecting himself from the disappointment of not being able to have the chance at the cure, or if he truly would have refused...it's such a difficult time...my prayers are with you and your family. Marcie
