I think attitude has a lot to do with helping one deal well with a disease. But it doesn't mean always have a happy face, like some in this room suggest. It means allowing ones feelings to be expressed, dealing with very basic emotions and problems. Cancer sometimes is a lever to allow one to deal with things that were a problem: bad marriage, bad job, unhappy life. For example, someone may recognize that the lousy marriage they were putting up with before their cancer diagnosis is no longer worth putting up with. They may get out of the marriage causing them pain and unhappiness. That is a great attitude but not the fake happy face so many insist cancer patients have.
