I would highly recommend the patches. When my husband was first diagnosed, he was in very much pain. His doctor started him on the patches and gave him Percocet for times when the pain was especially bad. He was not able to take either oxycontin or morphine because it would block up his intestines and make him very dizzy. In the end when the pain was really bad, he was given Vicodin and had a pump implanted. There are many pain meds and I think your doctor needs to try something that does not make your MIL 'out of it'. It is bad enough to feel awful, without having terrible side effects from pain medicine. My prayers are with you. Helen
