Recently my mother needed at stent inserted due to a tumor that has developed in her colon. Original diagnosis was cancer of the pancreas. The stent was used to try to avoid a surgery, to open the blockage in her colon. The doctors at University of Chicago said that this is a cutting edge procedure that sometimes works and sometimes does not work. In my mothers case it did not work. The stent perforated her colon in two places. The procedure took place 2 weeks ago, and a about 5 days ago my mother really took a turn for the worse. Yesterday we called an ambulance and rushed wer to the emergency room. The doctors indicated that this was a very serious situation because of the infection issue, the perfs caused free air to form. The question is if this procedure is not so proven and can possibly lead to death should this have been monitored more closely, or should we have at least been sent home with a list of things to look out for due to the severity of the problem. Any response would be greatly appreciated.
