My Father had the Whipple at 77 years old and other than the cancer, had no other health problems. In fact, had always been very healthy and a very active lifestyle. However, he had the whipple at a 'low volume' institution. The first week after his whipple he was doing very well but then started downhill and passed away the second week. Turns out he had developed a leak and since this hospital and staff were not very familiar with whipples it went undiagnosed and untreated. My point is: Take your Mother to a very experienced surgeon and hospital. The whipple IS a chance for a cure and I have heard more and more success stories. I don't want anyone to experience the unnecessary sorrow that we did.
