Although my own mother chose to use hospice at home and did not want to try chemo, I wish she had tried the chemo just to see how she handled it. The common chemo to begin with is gemzar and while some have difficult side effects, many do not and it gives people longer to live. My mother died 11 weeks after diagnosis whereas people who use gemzar tend to live longer. My mother had high quality of life up until having a blood clot (common side effect of this cancer)go to her lung. Anyhow, I've seen studies recently that suggest people do better NOT having radiation in most circumstances. So I would try to say to your mother-in-law, 'How about just TRYING the chemo and you can stop if you hate it.'
