the fluids buildup is due to the huge amounts of liquid - mom had a very similar experience, her blood pressure dropped to 70 over 40 and had oxygen over her mouth. They did not intubate her, we were told that if she was intubated they would never be able to take it out. We didn't want her to die with a tube down her throat. 50lbs of water weight, she looked obese - she too could not lie down, she slept pretty much sitting up. between the pain meds (she was hallucinating, on morphine or something) and the TPN (which by the way, feeds tumors) it was pretty incredible. This was the beginning of the end for us - but she did bounce back from this brink of death (we called it the terrible tuesday) and continued to live another 2 months. We brought her to hospice (inpatient) and then she came home to pass on. She was a fighter, and didn't want to go, and kicked her heels all the way.
