ascites is a sign of late stage cancer, and can be very uncomfortable for the patient. If your mother is in good health, ther is a procedure in which they could put a tube from her abdominal cavity back into a vein, to keep re-introducing the fluid back into the system. This is much preferable to being drained, because of the proteins and enzymes the patient loses along with the fluid. However, it is considered surgical, so many people don't have this done. It is worth an inquiry. Good luck, and God Bless.
