I agree with you; a second opinion (especially with another surgeon) is very important. Also, if your mom has vein involvement, they can attempt to shrink the tumor away from the vein and then perform the surgery. There are also surgeons who will do the whipple, remove the vein, and replace the vein with a vein from the leg. Unfortunately, we did not find this out until it was too late for my dad. I don't know whether this is the way to go or not, but it is definitely worth looking into. I do know of a doctor who does this, but he is in Pennsylvania.
