Jane, I just lost my Father after a 52 month fight! He had a whipple in 1998 and then the cancer recurred in July of 2002. He had gemzar for a short while but he did have many complications throughout. I am so sorry that you need to be a part of this site but it is a very valuable resource for support and info! Pancreas cancer is a very aggressive cancer with poor statistics. That said, there are many that live fulfiling lives far beyond the statistics-why, no one knows but you will meet some on this board! I am a believer in building the immune system to help battle this disease-I was never really 'into' health foods or alternative meds but understanding the mechanics of cancer and chemo have helped to change my opinion. In some cases, chemo has helped people so I believe it to be an individual decision as to which treatment(s) to pursue but it is important that one becomes as educated as possible about this disease. Also remember, the physicians themselves do not have a 'lock' on what is appropriate so it is important that you become your own advocate! Look into all facets and be prepared! I am not trying to scare you-I think it is important to know that this can be beaten-but knowledge is paramount to help you deal with pancreas cancer! Of course the individual who is sick with the disease has the most to deal with but the caregivers also need to be prepared! My fingers are crossed! SC
