I wouldn't call it 'vanity'; I think for many people it is a question of 'dignity'. I don't know how it is with you, but I have seen with my father that, when you are very sick, people often tend to speak to you as if you were mentally ill, like to a small child. Especially in hospital, strange as it may seem, they do so; you know, rather loud saying things like : Well, how are WE? Aren't WE hungry today? etc. Two weeks ago, my father went to the hospital to have his chemo infusion removed from his catheter; he was waiting in the hall, the nurse came and said :"Pull your shirt up,please." "What, right here?" my father said. "Well of course, it doesn't matter." said the nurse. So my father stood there, looking very thin and pale, feeling very sick, with his shirt up while they were taking care of him, and visitors passing by and looking at him. Can you imagine the feeling? I can,and I was very angry. I feel that, when someone is very sick, dignity becomes more important then ever, and unfortunatly, appearances , in this world, often still determine how people treat you. And by the way, if my father would feel better looking purple, I would personally see to that.
