Janet--Hospice is not all 'all-or-nothing' or a 'once-committed, no turning back' organization. When my mother was dying, my father refused to let hospice help, saying it was a concession to death. Years later, a few months after my FIL was px'd with PC, hospice started providing services for him and my MIL. What a wonderful organization, and they are not about giving up, but about smoothly transitioning from living to dying. True, it was after treatment had ceased, but from March to July, hospice provided myriad services, including-for the last month of his life- daily visits by a hospice nurse. This is very comforting to have a trained nurse check vitals, answer ?'s, and keep a dialogue going between patient and doctor. As I have said in other postings, it was Paps' hospice nurse who arranged to have him hospitalized when the vomiting got unstoppable, and it was his hospice nurse, visiting at the hospital on her time off, who told us to call the family in for final goodbyes.

It will help your mother and everyone who loves your mother to have the aid of hospice. Best of luck to you all, and continue to hold hope. lisa
