I would suggest to try and find out what her current state of mind is and take it from there. Being diagnosed with cancer is devastating news and the patient needs to come to terms with this. We all react differently - and instead of distraction, she might want to talk about her illness. If you've been friends, you can probably sense her moods and you'll be able to pick up on what her needs are. A strong support system is one of the most comforting things and I am sure, she'll let you know, how you can help.
