Renee, just about every medical plan states they will not pay for clinical trials. This is sort of a red herring because you are not charged by the trial sponsor. Medication and laboratory fees are borne by the trial sponsor. It might cost your plan a little more in terms of frequency of oncologist visits, CT Scans, etc., depending on the trial protocol. I'm in an HMO, but my oncologist is also in private practice. He is a member of an organization called PRN (Physicians Referral Network) composed of about 150 drs nationwide who share clinical trial info. I am participating in a study involving Gemzar & Merimastat (experimental drug). My onc had to go to some sort of HMO committee to get approval for me to be in this study, but irt didn't seem to be a big deal -- he got the approval first time he asked. He has a research nurse in his private practice who he shares with 2 other oncologists & she's the one who came up with this study as being the best choice for me. So far I'm doing really well, so I guess it was the right choice. My recommendation is to go to the director or head of the HMO & put your concerns in writing with a cc to your oncologist. Based on what you say about the onc originally recommending clinical trials & then backing down I suspect somebody who holds the purse strings has recommended against it. However, in my experience if you make enough noise, you can usually get results. I will add your husband to my prayers.
