Dear Diane: The portal vein is one of the main big veins bringing blood back
from the legs. If the tumor is blocking the portal vein, your mom would have
a lot of swelling. It sounds like the tumor might be growing, and causing
some of your mom's symptoms. Have they considered any other chemo?? my dad
is on Gemzar (started on 5-FU then switched) and it seems to be keeping the
tumor from growing or at least growing rapidly. People with low blood
protein ( albumin) will have a lot of swelling too so it's not neccessarily
from the tumor. But, I would be concerned that time might be drawing short
for her, especially if she is not receiving any kind of treatment at all to
shrink the tumor or stop its growth. Is she being treated at a center where
they are very experienced with bile duct cancer????
