My husband was retired and on Medicare with Medi-Gap insurance. We did receive some bills which I didn't pay. From previous experience we found the hospital would bill the insurance, some of it would be denied, we'd be billed, insurance would be resubmitted by the hospital, we'd get notification by the hospital that the bill was paid, insurance would also contact us, etc... Don't pay anything until all the bouncing is done. The hospital initially won't do much and, if they do, you can talk with the medical social worker (which might be a good thing to do anyway).
