Dear Fran: I don't have any experience with hospital bills personally, but it seems like even the crappiest American health insurance usually has good inpatient hospital coverage. If you get in the door, most drugs, treatment, etc. is covered. It is the outpatient tests, treatment, ER, etc. that seems to cause the most problems. I also think that once someone is admitted, the hospital starts bearing some of the responsibility for making sure it complies with the insurance company policies--the patient can't be calling every day to make sure their IVs, drugs, etc. are covered. Lastly, I believe if a hospital thinks they are not going to be paid by an insurance company, they make you sign something saying you understand and accept the unpaid charges. So, I hate to think of you having to worry about big hospital bills at a time like this, I hope someone with more experience can verify that this shouldn't be a problem for you.

Take good care.
