If he had a combination of chemotherapy and radiation he could have had a hard time in the first month. My experience was that after 4 weeks of chem/rad the treatment was stopped for two weeks due to rapid weight loss. My guess is that he needs to build back some strength before he starts again. One month suspending treatment won't make a difference on the overall effectiveness of chem/rad and may in fact assist his immunity systemto become stronger.
