My husband had ascities drained from his abdominal cavity last week. He said it was a bit painful. They numb the area where they insert a small drainage tube and kind of syphon the fluid into a bottle. My husband had only about 1-2 cups (not a very scientific term, but I can't remember the correct one) of fluid. The doctor said some people have up to 3-4 large bottles of fluid drained. Since he had only a small amount drained, he did not feel much relief. I'm sure it depends on the amount of fluid your dad has. If more, probably more relief. Good luck and best wishes.
