I wasn't with my brother when he had the ascites withdrawn, but I seem to recall that my SIL said it took about 20-30 minutes. He insisted that they use ultrasound with it so they could see better what they were doing, and they almost knicked his bowel even with the ultrasound. Setting up the ultrasound takes a few minutes, too. More often than not the ascites will come back, but it is not always true. I think Colleen posted something about Gary's even disappearing one night--just wasn't there in the morning even though he had it the night before (but this is Gary, the Wonder-Guy! Who knows what mere mortals go through!). I think they can repeat the procedure as often as they need to, but most common based on my experience is once every 7-14 days. I don't think infection should be a big concern unless she's had some other skin problems, allergies, or some other condition. Of course, it's possible, but my brother never had it in any of his 4 procedures and he was prone to getting stuff. Hope that helps. Good luck to your mom!
