What tests has your friend had? If he is uneasy, has he considered a second opinion? I note that there is urgency with pancreatic cancer, and even with tests, apparently sometimes these are not totally conclusive before surgery (as in my case). I faced the same possibility as your friend. When they did the surgery it had already metasticized, so a bypass (which is not potentially curative like the Whipple) was done instead.
