Rich, I understand your fear. I was given the same odds for my mom in July 2000. She did have pc and underwent a Whipple in early August. Her recovery was hard and in December she discovered that the pc had spread to her liver. She was very disappointed (as was the whole family) but she started Gemzar immediately. Yesterday we got the results of blood work and ct scans after her first round of chemo, and there is a considerable improvement (her CA19-9 has gone from 500 to 185, and the liver tumors are reduced). Our world has become much happier. This is a very scary disease for both the patient and the caregivers. You must be as strong and knowledgable as you possibly can for both your mother's sake and your own. I have learned a lot from this board: sometimes the stories are sad and/or terrifying, but many times you'll see good news, improvement, hope. We are all trying to "live" with this disease, rather than "die" from it; it's a battle, but when it's your loved one, nothing is too much to ask or do. I will keep you and your mother in my prayers; keep hope in your heart. All best, eileen
