Hi Lillie:i am sorry i was unable to respond to you sooner. it seems entirely reasonable to have the chest fluid checked by cytology to see what cells are in it. that may help determine if the cause is the bile duct cancer, infectious, post-surgical, or other. the CAT scan also seems like a good idea. once the doctors know the cause of the chest fluid collection, they can institute the proper therapy. while your dad's hemoglobin is low, the need for transfusion is usually dictated in large part by the patient's symptoms. your dad's doctors will be able to determine this. good luck to you and to your dadpeter argani
