Maybe he should see a rhematologist - a specialist in many auto-immune diseases - for an opinion. Perhaps treatment with a medication (steroids?) to help quiet the cause of the pain might be helpful, and rheumatologists know these meds better.

GI doctors are not pain experts, unfortunately, but it is true that pancreatitis is extremely painful so they know that! Keep pushing the GI docs and let them know the pain is unbearable. If they aren't helping, ask if there is a pain doc specialist they work with who can give more advice.
