I have pushed and pushed for a Neuro consult & a neuropsychiatric consult. The surgeon adamantly maintains that she has sundowning and gastroparesis. Other family members drank the kool aid & believe whatever the surgeon says. Yes, a GI is involved and has made some progress. My MIL has 2 facial expressions - a Parkinson's like face ask or an inappropriate smile. Ask a question & her response is a smile or a shoulder shrug. She has items from home & is not aware that they are her personal items. She isn't even aware that she has had a cat for several years. Her feeding tube remains because she continues to fail swallow tests. She does not get out of bed and has a catheter. I am researching pseudobulbar palsy as a possible diagnosis. PT & OT are now involved doing passive ROM. Her body is not strong enough to start chemo/radiation. I FIRMLY believe that the surgeon is now clueless regarding her care and wants her out of the hospital so that her demise will not effect his mortality statistics.
