My husband had the Whipple last May. This surgery is only offered to people who are diagnosed early enough to have a positive outcome. It is definitely a complicated operation so you should go to a major hospital that performs this procedure regularly. Only 20% of people diagnosed with pc are in the early stages, so most are not given this option. My husband had few complications, we decided beforehand to be proactive in order to avoid complications. He was out of the hospital in 6 days.

With all that being said, he had 8 months of remission, meaning they could not detect cancer in his body. In March of this year he was found to have a regrowth of the tumor at the surgery site, at the head of his pancreas. He is now on chemo and we have been told he will need to have this chemo for the rest of his life, unless he decides to stop treatment. In our case the Whipple extended his life but didn't save it. A small percentage of people have no recurrence, they are very fortunate. We felt we had to opt in for the surgery or my husband would surely die.

Other groups I have found to be helpful are, Blog for a Cure and there is a Facebook page called Whipple Survivors. Good luck and may god bless you with good heath.
