Hi Helen, I haven't been on in years, but checked in today, and happened to see your message. In case you haven't had your distal yet, as another poster said, they aren't that horrible! They ARE surgery, and they do kinda suck, but you'll be back up & walking within a day of your surgery, and the total recovery will most likely be just a few weeks (i was back at work in about 4, iirc.) I had mine in May of 2014 for a non-functioning neuroendocrine neoplasm. After it was out, i finally found out that mine was benign (nearly 10 years of wondering if it was cancerous or benign!) My surgeon was able to do simply a distal & ennucleation of my tumor, no splenectomy, so that might change things a bit, too, i'm not sure. Scar-wise, i'm not sure what to expect, i went in to my own surgery expecting a Whipple & woke to a nurse saying 'Distal' when i was in the recovery area, so my scar is long-navel to just under my sternum. Recovery was pretty easy, just lots of rest (on my back on tge couch with my feet up, with my scar uncovered & 'airing out'.) And lots of walks.

Good luck on your own distal! I hope everything goes smoothly for you!
