Every one of us should join this trial if and when our disease progresses after standard of care treatment isn't successful.
It is an incredible, nation-wide trial that is free. If you are found to be eligible, they will take some of your tumor and do extensive DNA sequencing of the tumor DNA to look for mutations that could be contributing to the growth of the tumor. Then, based on the mutations you have, they will recommend new, specific treatments that may work against those specific tumor mutations that you should try.
In some cases, the drugs they recommend are things that are new and your insurance company would never pay for because they are not proven and would be considered experimental. These drugs are often very expensive, but for us they would be free in the trial.
The trial is not only for pancreatic cancer. Anyone with a 'solid' tumor that has progressed after standard therapy is eligible. They are starting to realize that sometimes the exact site of your cancer is not the only important thing.... but it is the genes that are mutated in your cancer that may be the most important thing that should be guiding treatment. So maybe a pancreatic cancer with a EGFR mutation SHOULD be treated like a lung cancer with an EGFR mutation, for example.
This is a very important trial, and a great opportunity for us all.
Please read about it, and talk to your doctor now to see if he/she is aware of it and if your hospital site has been enrolling patients. Even if you are not eligible now, it is important to let your doctor know this is what you want in the future, if needed.
Because this is the future.
I would do this in a heartbeat, and have my mother do it in a heartbeat.
Is anyone already in it? If so, please share your experience. It is very exciting!
