Thank you so much for your reply- these are great questions. Since writing my post there have been some new developments. It sounds like the severe pain my dad was having may have been caused by a severe muscle spasm and not the bone mets (they said the area that he was feeling pain would not be from the bone mets unless is was referred pain). They have him taking a muscle relaxant and it seems to be helping somewhat. He's still on 300 mg fentanyl patches.

We have noticed changes in my dad's mental state during this week. He's confused at times, making comments that seem off topic or not related to anything. He sometimes sleeps with his eyes open- does a lot of staring. This is really scary and I'm not sure if this indicates late stage cancer symptoms or tons of pain medication or just both. I love him so much and I'm so sad for him.
